To work in a job that involves serving alcohol you must take an RSA course called SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service
to get a nationally recognised RSA certificate (aka Statement of Attainment). Although you can use this RSA certificate in most states, NSW is the exception in insisting that the course must be taken there to be valid.
Some other states want you to do a bit extra. Victoria, for instance, requires an additional free online bridging course before they recognise an interstate qualification. There are other differences among the states and territories too. Some states have different expiry dates (NSW 5 years, Vic 3 years) or no need for renewal at all (SA and Qld). The amount of time you can spend in a job involving the service of alcohol before you must get the certificate varies as well, ranging from no time to a week in the NT and three months in Tassie. There’s more to pulling a beer in Australia than meets the eye.
The responsible service of alcohol course will teach you how to:
The course is assessed with a series of multiple-choice questions about the course content.
It depends on what state or territory you are in, but you can be sure that any job where you actually serve or sell alcohol requires RSA training. That includes serving wine at a cellar door, bar work, serving tables in a licensed restaurant and selling liquor at a bottle shop or drive-in.
Some states require you to do an RSA refresher course. For example, in Victoria, you must take a refresher course after 3 years. New South Wales, on the other hand, stipulates that the qualification has to be refreshed after 5 years with a test and a renewal fee. But South Australia and Queensland do not put an expiry date on the certificate. As you can see, the regulations vary a good deal and they are not set in stone, so we recommend checking what applies in your jurisdiction by getting in touch with us.
The most important thing about doing the SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service
course is that you must do it with a registered training organisation (RTO) for the certification to be valid. We are an RTO and recommend face-to-face classroom training. That way you know what you are paying for and when.
There are age restrictions on the service of alcohol and you shouldn’t be surprised that regulations about this vary from state to state. Although you can do the course when you are 17 in SA, you can’t use the RSA certificate until you are 18. It is similar in Victoria.
Apart from being 18 or older, the only other requirement is that you have a unique student identifier or USI. It’s easy to get one online here if you don’t already have one.
