Cert 1 in Hospitality

SIT10216 Certificate 1 in Hospitality

The Cert 1 hospitality course teaches you the basics of customer service and food hygiene because its aim is to get you job-ready. Basically, it’s for people who are just starting out in the hospitality industry and looking for their first job working in a team. Accordingly, you’ll get up to speed on what’s needed to work in cafes, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs and pubs. The training is hands-on and practical, so you can confidently tackle any of the tasks that will come up in the real world.

What do you have to do to get the Cert 1 in Hospitality?

It’s a 3 week full-time course that covers a lot of ground so that you are well-prepared for work. You’ll find that official government training courses are made up of units and this course has 6 units. There are 3 core units, which you must do, and 3 electives that you choose. The following are the 3 core units:

  • BSBWOR203 Work effectively with others
  • SITXCCS001 Provide customer information and assistance
  • SITXWHS001 Participate in safe work practices

Practices for Food Safety

Because it’s so important that people don’t get sick when served food, you also have to do either SITHIND001 Use hygienic practices for hospitality service or SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety. Doing one of these units ensures that you know how to handle and store food safely.

Certificate 1 in Hospitality Electives

The 3 core units and one of the ‘use hygienic practices’ units make four units, leaving two more to choose from. The following are some of the options:

  • TLIE1005 Carry out basic workplace calculations
  • SITHCCC001 Use food preparation equipment
  • SITHCCC002 Prepare and present simple dishes
  • SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches
  • SITHCCC004 Package prepared foodstuffs
  • SITHACS001 Clean premises and equipment
  • SITHFAB001 Clean and tidy bar areas
  • SITHKOP001 Clean kitchen premises and equipment

What jobs do the Cert 1 in Hospitality lead to?

While this is not a qualification that will land you a leadership role right away, it is a solid foundation on which to build your career in hospitality. Because a number of the units you complete in this course count toward Certificate II and Certificate III in Hospitality, you will get credit for them if you go on to study those courses. As for jobs, there is:

  • food runner
  • glass runner
  • kitchen steward
  • housekeeping assistant
  • kitchen useful
  • bar useful

How much does the hospitality course cost?

This 3-week course run by professional trainers costs only $800, which is worthwhile considering how in-demand qualified hospitality workers are. What’s more, it’s better than the average price of this course on the Australian Government’s My Skills website, which is $882.
